The Social Lives of Bumblebees

April 24 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Dr. Patricia Jones is a new faculty member at Bowdoin College and Director of the Bowdoin Scientific Station on Kent Island. Her research has examined topics from the hunting behavior of tropical bats to the egg-laying preferences of monarch butterflies. One aspect of her research examines the foraging behavior of bumblebees.

In her talk at the Topsham Public Library, Dr. Jones will explore the remarkable social learning abilities of bumblebees, and the consequences of such abilities for plant pollination. She will also discuss local diversity in bees as well factors threatening their populations in Maine and beyond.
