Join Bowdoin College student and lifelong naturalist Brendan Murtha for an introduction into world of birds and birding, learning some of the local species you might see or hear in the Topsham area. This walk will focus on developing basic bird identification skills and understanding what you see and hear. The process will be broken down into simple components, teaching beginners how to keen in on useful clues in plumage, sound, behavior and context.

Walk is tailored for elementary and middle school, students, although all ages are welcome.

Brendan is a 19 year old young birder and naturalist attending Bowdoin College, where he is pursuing a degree in Ecology. Originally from Connecticut, he’s now been birding for over 10 years. He’s been fortunate enough to travel widely in pursuit of birds through field jobs and birding programs, but feels the most important aspect of birding is the local connection  to place it provides and intends on pursuing a career in nature outreach and education to champion such connection. At home, Brendan was a founding member and later the president of the Connecticut Young Birders Club, focusing efforts on outreach to make birding more accessible to youth across his home state. He currently works as a naturalist guiding whale watches and puffin cruises out of Boothbay.
