Topsham Area History Walk with Dana Cary and Susan Sorg

Dana and Susan will lead participants on a hike down to the Cathance River and will stop to discuss key historical activities in the area, beginning with Native American uses of the river, the naming of the Cathance, the early settlement of Topsham, and the importance of waterways to the settlers. They will discuss early business activity in Topsham and the business “boom” in the late 1700’s to early 1800’s related to the timber resources in the area and ship building. They will visit one of the feldspar quarry pits on the Preserve and discuss mining activity and the role of immigrants in Topsham at this time. Meet at CREA’s Ecology Center off Evergreen Circle in Highland Green.
Dana Cary serves on the Board of Trustees of the Topsham Historical Society and the Pejepscot Historical Society. Susan Sorg serves on the Board of Trustees of the Topsham Historical Society.
Please note: This is a 2 to 3 mile walk over uneven terrain on the trails of the Cathance Preserve. Please wear appropriate footwear and walk carefully.
