History of the Cathance River Preserve

September 8 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Dana Cary and Susan Sorg will present and discuss key historical activities in the area, beginning with Native American uses of the river, the naming of the Cathance, the early settlement of Topsham, and the importance of waterways to the settlers. They will discuss early business activity in Topsham and the business “boom” in the late 1700’s to early 1800’s related to the timber resources in the area and ship building. They will include information about the feldspar quarry pits on the Preserve and discuss mining activity and the role of immigrants in Topsham at this time.  The talk will be held at the CREA Ecology Center, off Evergreen Circle in Highland Green.

Dana Cary serves on the Board of Trustees of the Topsham Historical Society and the Pejepscot Historical Society. Susan Sorg serves on the Board of Trustees of the Topsham Historical Society.
